Gibbons have linked up with national construction firms Naylor Love and Fulton Hogan, on the $32 million Nelson Airport new terminal project which is scheduled to take 20 months. The need for the new terminal has been spurred by the huge growth in passenger numbers the terminal was seeing. 


The very technical build features timber prominently throughout and a unique roof structure has been designed to mimic the western ranges, which can be viewed through the "floor to ceil­ing" windows. The completed building will showcase Nelson grown and processed Nelson Pine Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL). The roof structure comprises 56 large triangle sections which have been prefabricated offsite to expediate the pro­gramme by Gibbons. These were then carted to the project site via the airports operational taxiway in between air traffic move­ments. Gibbons crane division was instrumental in erecting the roof sections into place. 


Construction within a 'live' airport and dealing with the height­ened awareness around debris and airborne risks to aircraft has also been a real challenge and one which we have successfully achieved without incident. This is a stunning building that cap­tures the imagination and we are proud to be a major subcon­tractor tasked with its delivery.

Affectionately known as the"Popcorn Box"for its unique shape, this six-storey bespoke control tower was delivered under a Design/Build contract. The main structure uses precast panels tapering outwards to create a trapezoidal box spanning five floors of meeting rooms, server rooms, offices and a control cab sitting atop. 


Creating something that is largely structural in form yet making it aesthetically pleasing to the eye has been a real test. Assembly of the precast panels on the angle, on ever-increasing footplates was managed through careful planning and utilization of our expertise in our crane division. The control tower cab was prefabricated off site to expedite the pro­gramme and craned into position once the precast panels and concrete works were completed.

Summerland Transport

Location: Unit 6a, 750 Lower Queen Street Industrial Park

Summerland Transport approached us for a bespoke logistics building solution within our 750 Lower Queen Street Industrial Park.

What we collaboratively developed was a secured 338m2 warehouse with large 446m2 covered canopy, small 56m2 office and amenity structure with a yard to cater for their vehicle needs.

The exterior cladding is mixture of precast and metal cladding to provide durability and aesthetics.

As there was no set design brief, this project was an excellent example of how we can deliver a tailored package to our clients.

Project: Food distribution

Location: Unit 2, 750 Lower Queen Street Industrial Park

Client: Bidfood

Value: $7m

Contract period: 10 months

Bidfood is a bespoke food distribution warehouse and high spec office situated on a 1.77ha site to allow for future expansion.

This project was given on of the prime sites at our 750 Lower Queen Street Industrial Park, and is designed and constructed to enable maximum efficiency for the end user.

The 3000m2 warehouse including canopy, comprised of specialist floor slabs, loading docks, pre-cast, Polyisocyanurate (PIR) Panel and metal cladding of steel framing, is made up of a variety of temperature controlled rooms varying from ambient temperature down to -25⁰C.

The 409m2 office is mix of specialist management and distribution rooms, drying room, amenities and open plan with the exterior clad with striking expansive blue tint glass and alucobond fascia surrounding the split level roof structure.

This project had set time frames and quality standards which had to be met, and were, achieved all in light of challenging weather conditions and delays beyond our control.

Through effective management and a collaborative approach, we were able to deliver this product co-ordinating with our and the clients subcontractors and specialist trades and items such as the 350,000L fire tank and sprinkler system with the ability to provide 6000L/min

The end product is a facility which Bidfood can expand their business and already we are looking to bring forward their expansion stages.

Project: Partial Demolition, Seismic Strengthening, Refurbishment and Fit-

Location: 38 Halifax Street, Nelson

Client: G.P Investments Ltd.

Value: $2.4m

Contract period: 12 months

Clifford House is situated upon 38 Halifax Street and holds a great deal of significance to the Gibbons group in terms of nostalgia and the claim of being one of the first properties under the Gibbons Property portfolio.  

However, since mid 2013, it remained vacant and un-tenanted due to the seismic risk and low NBS it held. After reviewing various seismic strengthening designs, Gibbons settled on a course of action to resurrect this building and it is planned to undergo a substantial body of work.  

The first part of the process was partial demolition being the removal the top two floors to reduce the mass of the building and thus reduce the amount of strengthening work.  This work was not insignificant and works were controlled and managed so that the demolished was undertaken without any risk or damage to neighbouring properties

The next phase was to undertake the strengthening and re-build work. This was a combined effort of foundations, bracing, increase in suspended floor seating and a multi-floor steel k-brace, together lifting the hinge point of the structure to the first floor and dramatically improving the seismic performance of the building.

The top floor is to be re-built in lightweight framing with a new roof over a steel portal frame.  The finished result was a building >80%NBS. 

The last phase was to refurbish and modernise the exterior, interior, improve functionality and provide new tenant facilities. The directive for the desired outcome is to have a completed building ready to let which, from the exterior and interior, has the look and feel of a new building with a look that will last, is economical and is maintenance friendly. This was achieved with new exterior claddings of Alucobond with new painting over the entire building, new Aluminium joinery throughout, improving accessibility with a new entrance and new internal stairs and lastly bringing services and creating commercial office toilet areas on each floor all with quality fittings.

With the above complete, we were able to secure an excellent tenant and were proud to assist with their fit-out which was again was to a very high standard.

 

Lucas House

Lucas House has made a significant impact on the advancement of timber construction technology integration into multistory commercial construction. The innovative design which reflects these new technologies, utilizes structural timber components, with engineered concrete to form a structurally sound response to new building standards.

It represents a significant step towards an environmentally responsible and realizable timber commercial building type. Utilizing locally engineered and produced timber components, this building aspires to legacy and has quickly attracted a full house of tenants.

Incorporating new earthquake dampening technology, new timber technology, multiple stories and an inner city site provided Gibbons Construction the opportunity to create something special.

The accuracy required when building a multi-level timber and precast concrete structure like Lucas House should not be overlooked. The majority of the timber structure and concrete work throughout the building not only remains exposed but has also become an architectural feature of the design. Every joint fits like a glove, allowing the timber and concrete to be the show piece it deserves to be.

The exposure to these new and established techniques gained during the construction of this building has given the Gibbons Construction team significant experience and advantage for many other LVL timber structures it has completed since.

Speights Ale House

A structural build for the iconic Speights Alehouse. 

A mix of structural steel, architectural precast concrete and natural timbers, complemented the angular shapes and forms of this building without detracting from the functionality and style.
